Space Is the Place, Says Air Force Chief of Staff

At a recent NDIA Washington Chapter luncheon Gen. Michael Ryan, chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, outlined what he saw as the Air Force's future.

Not long ago, said Ryan, officials gathered together in Colorado for a conference on the Air Force's forecast. It was decided that space would play a vital role.

"Sometime-way out there-we will be the Air Space Force," said Ryan. "We're counting on space. In the future, almost everyone of our missions will, in some way, be affected by space," he said.

According to Ryan, 90 percent of all the funding for U.S. military space activity is funded by the Air Force.

"[It] is not an end in itself," he said. "Space is a place to leverage capabilities that will affect all mankind."

The capabilities to which he was referring include global surveillance, communications, and navigation-technologies that the Air Force is already using "in many ways. …
