have a background in linguistics, so I cringe a little bit when I have to use terms that aren't included in modern dictionaries. I have little choice, however, for this month's cover story on cyber-risk-the many emerging exposures waiting for companies venturing into cyberspace. Lori Jorgensen, risk manager-worldwide products for Microsoft, is on the cutting edge of these and other technologyrelated issues. As a deputy member of RIMS, she graciously agreed to take the time to share some advice about mitigating these exposures with the rest of us. We've discussed this subject before, and we're sure to do so again because cyberspace's legal infrastructure is still on the drawing boards. The best we can hope for is to try to understand the state of affairs now and worry about the dictionaries catching up later.

That's not the case for directors' and officers' insurance, however. There is a substantial history to draw on, as author Phil Norton has, to formulate educated predictions about the short-term future of this important coverage. In fact, Mr. Norton says soft market conditions are not likely to persist in this segment, which is fast becoming unprofitable for underwriters.
