Beyond the meltdown

Malcolm Pro wie and Roger Latham's feature 'Beyond the meltdown', published in January, explained how longterm problems would have far more catastrophic effects on Western economies than the short-term issues preoccupying media and politicians. The article has continued to attract a lot of interest and comments, some of which are included below

This is the first time I have seen an article here that clearly links the current issues with the longterm problems facing us. We should be giving these long-term problems our main emphasis, not the short-term ones. The issues of sustainabilty and resilience are paramount.


We now face a most formidable future and need sustainable reforms pursued simultaneously at each level of government. It is both absurd and irresponsible to go on placing so much effort and so many hopes on local action, such as Community Budgets, when so little is done to effect a more systematic approach to responsibility at the centre. …
