Those who were horrified by Calixto Bieito's drug and sex production last year by English National Opera would have been mortified by yet another very very sexy new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, this time by none other than David Alden at Cologne's Opera House. But similarities end there, because Alden sees Giovanni as an artist, living in his penthouse surrounded by balconies, large glass windows and double height ceilings. Everybody wants to be invited to this very well designed Designer's pad. But this Don Giovanni is also very introverted and on 2 July the first night flowed like good wine and the public relished it up to the last drop. Don Giovanni is actually quite allergic to the one woman he actually loves: every time Elvira appears he sneezes! But what an Elvira! Because Martina Serafin not only looked curvy and glamorous, a prerequisite for all the women in this production, but also sang with good tone and Mozartian discipline. Needless to say she has to endure many indignities, especially the Catalogue Aria, which of course does not contain a Catalogue because this spin-doctor Leporello has a digital camera and the photos are all spread over a settee for Elvira to rummage through enabling her to both horrify and excite herself with Giovanni's sexual prowesses.

However, the Don is not alone in the pursuit of pleasure, because Natalie Kerl's Zerlina is a genuine sex kitten. Scantily dressed, abandoned in bra and small panties by a jealous Masetto outside the windows and possibly catching a cold she manages to get back in to fulfil one of her phantasies and have sex by sitting on top position of Masetto during the Second Act's Sextet! …
