The Association of College and Research Libraries announced that Paula T. Kaufman was named the 2012 Academic/Research Librarian of the Year. The award of $5,000, sponsored by YBP Library Services, recognizes a librarian who has made national or international contributions to academic/research librarianship and library development.

Currently, Kaufman is the Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson dean of libraries, university librarian, and professor of library administration at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. Prior to this, she was dean of libraries at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Previously, she was business and economics librarian at Columbia University. She served on the Association of Research Libraries board of directors, including a term as president. She was a founding board member of the Consortium of Academic Libraries in Illinois. She is a published author and has presented at global conferences.

The American Library Association announced that Winston Tabb is the recipient of the 2012 Patterson Copyright Award.

Currently, Tabb is dean of libraries and museums at Johns Hopkins University. He was appointed to the Institute of Museum and Library Services in 2010. He is also the chair of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' standing committee on Copyright and other Legal Matters and works with the World Intellectual Property Organization.
