Kansas State Council Finds Political Voice

A "get out the vote" campaign that built relationships and political clout with local and state officials earned the Kansas State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management a 2011 Pinnacle Award.

The council's 2010 Election Committee was born when council leaders realized that volunteer efforts at the grassroots level on business issues such as immigration, workers' compensation reform and unemployment underfunding weren't getting the attention of state legislators.

The need to communicate effectively with lawmakers intensified when council members discovered that legislation mandating the use of E-Verify-the federal government's online portal to check job applicants' eligibility to work in the U.S.-was coming before the state legislature.

Following testimony before the state legislative body and advocacy from Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) members around the state, the bill failed to pass, wrote Chris Burger, SPHR, GPHR, the council's legislative affairs director, in an e-mail.

The council's Election Committee was formed, and it produced a "Get Out the Vote" activities guide that was distributed to every SHRM chapter in Kansas. …
