The name o f Patrick Reyntien s (born 1925) is indissolubly linked to the recent history of stained glass in this country. Reyntiens bridges the o f ten t rouble some gap between cra f t and a r t : not on ly i s he a superb and innovat ive cra f t sman , but he i s also a substantial artist. The second quality is not always recognised.

Best known as John Piper's associate, many a s sume that Piper wa s the artist behind their stained- glass col laborat ion s , w ith Reynt ien s a s technical expert. Actually, Reyntiens played a more creat ive role than i s generally supposed.
