My Storytime Bible Renila Boyle, writer; Melanie Florian, illustrator Pauline Books & Media, Boston 2011, 141 pages, $15.95 (hardback) ISBN 0-8198-4884-0

This book is an interesting read for children and adults alike, opening the door to questions and thoughtful discussion of the Bible. The author incorporates readings from both testaments by presenting them in succinct summaries in a short-story format.

Sixty-eight short stories capture the hearts and minds of children throughout this picturesque hardcover book. Each short story, reminiscent of parables, spans a mere two pages and comes alive through vibrant illustrations.

Each of the illustrations selects one point within the short story and frames the story, offering intrigue and interest that will captivate young readers and get them asking questions.

The author creates natural-language titles that set the tone for each of the stories. "Jesus is Baptized," "The Colorful Coat" and "Twelve Spies" are examples of easy-to-understand words that children can relate to and begin their understanding of the Bible.

Underneath the titles of the short stories are references to exact biblical passages to which the short stories refer, along with two quick sentences, directing readers to reflect upon their own experiences. These sentences ask the reader to relate to modern-day experiences to help the reader understand the short story.

For instance, in "The Kingmaker" (1 Sm 8-10, 15-16), the quick sentences immediately engage, asking: "Have you ever judged someone by the way they look? Then you'll know how Samuel felt when God asked him to anoint a king."

The size of the type, quantity of words, quality of some of the expressions and length of the stories indicate that this book is most appropriate for young readers who already have been exposed to complex books and have a solid grasp of the written word. …
