Dear Ms. Zimmerman,

Thank you for your editorial and recent Creativity issue in Art Education (January, 20 11). The "treacherous space" between theory and practice is painfully felt by some of us who are teaching in the K-1 2 classroom. You said, "Mind that gap." I would like that to be shouted on the rooftops! Thank you!

A very small number of classroom teachers are listening carefully to contemporary theory and working hard to implement it in our everyday classrooms, while at the same time making room for wonder and enchantment. Integrating contemporary theory with creative artmaking is the hard work that NAEA doesn't address much. We need help with this!

At the national conference presentations I've attended over the last 4 years, we get theory from the academics with little advice on how to implement it. On the other hand, we get lessons on the elements and principles of design from classroom teachers who are from another land entirely. …
