José Carlos De Sousa Remembered with Affection

It is with sadness and many warm memories that we report the passing of our dear friend and colleague José Carlos de Sousa, after a short illness in March of this year. Over the last two decades, José Carlos was instrumental in helping his wife Maria Angela Nicco and her colleagues build the Brazil Dyslexia Association (ABD) into a regional center for disseminating information about the nature, diagnosis and treatment of dyslexia in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking communities. In her comments at José Carlos's memorial service in Sao Paolo, ABD's President, Rosemari Maria de Mello, referred to José's extraordinary dedication, his passionate intellect, and his generosity of spirit.

José was critically involved in helping ABD to become the second National Affiliate of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and then a Global Partner. He accompanied his partner and wife, Maria Angela, to each of IDA's annual conferences over the past 15 years, and served as ABD's International Director since 2005. No Global Partner's meeting was complete without José's can-do attitude and candid insights. His work for ABD was in addition to his entrepreneurial interests in developing and marketing products for dentistry and photography.

José Carlos, a dentist by training, maintained his practice in Sao Paulo while fighting for the interests of people with dyslexia. Over time he developed lasting friendships with many IDA members, a number of whom have stories of traveling to Sao Paolo to lecture for ABD, being welcomed into José Carlos and Maria Angela's home with a massive abraco (hug), feasting on Maria Angela's delicious flan, and being regaled by José's opinions of South American politics. …
