IN MEMORIAM: Eleonora Turovsky (1940-2012)

On March 2, 2012 Montreal, and indeed the world, lost an important figure, an accomplished musician and artist, and a dedicated teacher and mentor with the passing of 72-year-old Eleonora Turovsky. She was best known as the concertmaster of I Musici de Montréal (IMDM) the chamber orchestra founded, in 1983, by her husband cellist Yuli Turovsky.

Eleonora taught violin and viola at Concordia University and the Université de Montréal from 1991 to 2012 but she was also the beloved teacher of many students in her private studio. Her students populate the ranks of IMDM, its young offshoot the Orchestre de Chambre Nouvelle Génération, and the orchestra of the Université de Montreal. She also left appreciative pupils in her native city of Moscow, which she left in 1976.

Ella, as she was known to her students, remained active as a teacher at the Université de Montréal into February, 2012. …
