Business credit executives, like most professionals, are often forced to navigate obstacles. It seems as though in every dimension of our lives, we are discovering that keeping up with the Joneses professionally is no longer good enough. We must out shine them to survive because we face more competition than generations before us.

In our personal lives, we encounter the ever present obstacle of limited time for family and leisure. Statistics say we work longer hours, therefore giving a bigger chunk of our lives to our careers. But, we have an unprecedented commitment to continuing our formal education.

These transformations have manifested themselves over the past decade. Experts tell us that the year 2000 will bring massive change to all aspects of our lives. Therefore, it is essential that we take control of our destiny, develop a strategy, and have a constant vision. If we are not willing to change, the obstacles to success will overwhelm us.

The next generation of credit professionals is already receiving an education. Their most significant abilities, and those which challenge today's seasoned professionals the greatest, are flexibility and the willingness to make change happen.

As American and worldwide companies create a new global business environment, we will be expected to adapt. The smart credit professional will anticipate the need for change and have a plan. Credit professionals will have to manage through a complex maze of challenging economic conditions, rapidly emerging technology, and a never ending obsolescence of equipment and tools. …
