In Our Doers Profile, we highlight some of the hardworking and talented individuals in public human services. This issue features Dr. Raquel Hatter, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

Name: Dr. Raquel Hatter

Title: Commissioner, Tennessee Department of Human Services

Years of Service: With 22 years of service to children and families, I have served in many roles, including frontline practitioner, therapist, outreach worker, program director, vice president/chief operating officer and chief executive officer. I have been the commissioner since January 2011.

Rewards of the Job: I especially enjoy serving under the innovative and transformational leadership of Governor Bill Haslam. I serve on the governor's statewide Customer Focused Government Team. I enjoy leading a department with such an amazing mission of partnering with resilient children and families in their journey toward self-sufficiency and creating a better quality of life.

Accomplishments: I have found so many aspects of my journey to be very rewarding. Some of those include the following:

The work I did working in partnership with many stakeholders such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Alliance for Children and Families, the American Association of Children's Residential Centers (AACRC), Youth Move, and many others on the Building Bridges initiative, focused on improving systems of care for children and families. This work helped lay the foundation for establishing guiding principles for a fami Iy- driven, youthguided system of support.

The work I have done in the Northern Territory of Australia in their efforts to serve indigenous families involved assisting them with implementing strength-based and effective leadership practices. It involved talking with and meeting members of Parliament regarding funding needs and the importance of access to education. …
