Assisted-Living Facilities to Test Insulin-Delivery Pen

Three firms-Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Marriott Senior Living Services, and Medicine-OnTime, a medication management system firm-have joined forces to test-market Novo Nordisk's Novolin Prefilled insulin-delivery system at assisted-living facilities run by Marriott in New Jersey.

The three-phase pilot program will determine the cost-effectiveness of using the pen-style delivery system, including whether it improves compliance. In the first phase, Novo Nordisk will distribute the pens via the Tempus Medical Services pharmacy in Laurel Springs, N.J., to several dozen patients at area assisted-living facilities run by Marriott.

If the first phase-scheduled to run through the summer-is successful, the three firms partnered for the agreement will then expand the program to include more facilities and pharmacies across the nation. Novo Nordisk will provide the pens via Medicine-OnTime's pharmacy network, which already handles medication packaging for oral solids in the Marriott facilities.
