How Three Current Montessorians Were Inspired

Intrigued by the question of how some of my peers were inspired to enter the Montessori field, I conducted some informal interviews. The following are vignettes from those interviews:

Kathleen Evans, faculty member at Chaminade University of Honolulu, said, "Every Montessorian has that spark and that transformative moment in their lives when they know Montessori is a calling. When I heard one of my professors speak, it was as if all my cells realigned, and I knew I would become a Montessori educator. When you find a mentor that you can see providing the vision, I saw in her a legacy for me. Now I feel my mission is to be a legacy for others" (personal communication, AMS Annual Conference, San Francisco, March 17, 2012).

Elizabeth Park, director of the Montessori teacher education program at Chaminade University of Honolulu, stated, " Nanette Schonleber (the former director of the Montessori track at Chaminade) modeled leadership and was willing to take a chance, and gave me constant encouragement. …
