A student was sounding out the word "desk" in the blue vowel tower. She sounded it out correctly but couldn't get the word. "Desk," the teacher told her, and still nothing registered.

"Do you know what that is?" the teacher asked.

"No," she replied.

The teacher then told her that some students go to school each day and sit in the same place, called a desk. She made a funny face and said that that didn't sound like much fun.

The other day, it had been raining quite a bit. When we went outside, my son found an earthworm on our walkway. He bent down and gently picked up the earthworm and scolded it for making a poor decision to crawl out onto the concrete instead of staying on the grass. He gently moved the earthworm back to the lawn.

I told him that what he was doing was very kind but that there would be many more earthworms crawling out from the yard due to the rain. …
