Thanks to the devotion of string teachers, committed students, music directors, school administrators, supportive parents, and the vast support network that brings such a strong sense of community to the string world, string playing remains a thriving, vibrant pursuit.

Yes, it takes a village to nurture the next generation and to carry on the classical and folk traditions, and even to lay the foundation for innovation.

But it is, of course, the passion of the player that fuels this noble endeavor.

The three essays in the Teen Strings special section in this issue, written by teens, capture just how empowered today's young players are by the music, the instruments, and the bows that rest in the hands of Generation Next.
