Kent State Clarifies

I was delighted to see the article in the November issue by Susan McGreevy-- Nichols on dance education in Ohio ("Way To Go, Ohio!"). [However,] the information on our dance education program was somewhat misleading and incomplete. Kent State University offers a BFA in dance performance and in dance education, with some students opting to pursue a dual degree in both areas.

While we are located in the School of Theatre and Dance, affording our students greater involvement in Theatre Division courses and production opportunities, this is not the focus of our dance education offerings. The Dance Division is focused on modern dance with strong support in ballet and jazz, and our dance education majors are offered at least four dance performance opportunities every year.

Kent State also offers a dance education license option in the Master of Arts Teaching program through the College of Education. Students must hold an undergraduate degree in dance and fulfill the Kent State University dance education curricular requirements to enter this one-year intensive program.

Additionally, our website can now be accessed at, and we recently joined our colleagues at Ohio State and the University of Akron in becoming accredited institutional members of the National Association of Schools of Dance. …
