With Larry Maher's retirement in March, Robert B. Greene was elected VFW's quartermaster general on July 25. Here is abrief profile of each man.


Maher served as the organization's chief financial officer from March 2005 until March 2012. Prior to assuming that position, he been assistant quartermaster general since March 1995.

Beginning in 1979, he was legal counsel to VFW National Headquarters. Maher also was VFWs national parliamentarian and chairman of the National Bylaws Study Committee. A legacy life member of Post 7356 in Parkville, Mo., he put in a total of 33 years on behalf of VFW.

A 1968 cum laude graduate of Kansas City's Rockhurst University, he earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial relations. After earning a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City law school in 1975, Maher joined the SwansonMidgley law firm and became a partner in 1980. He remained there until joining the VFW staff in 1995.

Receiving his U.S. Navy commission in March 1969, Maher served nearly two years aboard the USS Oklahoma City as assistant fleet administrative officer with the Commander, 7th Fleet staff. Off Vietnam, the light cruiser provided naval gunfire support for Marines in I Corps. Stateside, Maher was a communications officer in the 12th Naval District based in San Francisco.

Discharged from active duty in March 1972, he remained in the Naval Reserve until 1992, attaining the rank of commander. …
