The American Civil Liberties Union of California hosted a media teleconference on September 27th to discuss its assessment of California's commitment to the kinds of criminal justice reforms needed to ensure the success of the state's prison realignment plan and a lasting reduction in both the number of people behind bars and recidivism rates.

The ACLU was joined in the teleconference by San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, a prominent supporter of sentencing reforms for drug violations and a backer of SB1506, a bill that stalled in the state legislature this year but which would have reduced the penalty for possession of illegal drugs from a felony to a misdemeanor. Ben Tulchin, the president and founder of Tulchin Research, also participated in the teleconference and will present new polling data revealing overwhelming public support of alternatives to incarceration. …
