Rx Time Guarantees Can Impact Safety, Pharmacist's Role

The results of a recent survey may come as no surprise to many pharmacists - that time constraints can have an effect on the community practice setting and patient safety.

The Community Pharmacy Time Guarantee Survey was conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and the American Pharmacists Association between June 9 and July 7.

The 22-question survey was emailed to 10,248 community pharmacists. Of the 673 respondents, 45% worked in a chain pharmacy, 20% in an independent pharmacy, and 25% in a grocery store/mass merchant pharmacy as a staff pharmacist (49%) or pharmacy manager (32%). The pharmacists were diverse in their weekly prescription volumes and years of experience.

Almost two-thirds (62%) of the respondents had policies and procedures relating to the time it takes to fill a prescription' 27% said that their pharmacy offers a time guarantee. Of these respondents, almost half (49%) do not have provisions at their pharmacies that allow them to exceed the time expectation The pharmacists who meet time guarantees receive salary bonuses (23%), and when they don't, in 21 % of pharmacies with a time guarantee, patients receive a reward or an incentive. …
