Member communications receive an upgrade; the importance of resilience in convulsive times

SEMS membership communications initiative

So, you paid your $35 for SEMS membership and are getting this quality publication, Industrial Management, every other month. Have you ever wondered what else you get? In my opinion, the top benefit is being part of a fantastic group of colleagues who can boost your professional growth and development - and they're fun to hang out with. Of course, to realize that, you need to engage with these great people through conferences, webinars or other interactive opportunities.

The SEMS board of directors recently undertook a new initiative to communicate with members. To help, I volunteered to serve as the SEMS general membership services coordinator. This initiative aims to encourage members to take advantage of the array of benefits SEMS provides. The initiative sends monthly welcome letters to new members. Starting this summer, it is scheduled to send letters to people whose memberships recently lapsed. New student members receive an additional flyer about SEMS student initiatives.

The letter explains some of the terrific benefits members gain from SEMS, along with ways to get involved:

* Industrial Management, the bimonthly publication that highlights best practice case studies and illuminates trends in engineering and management systems

* Articles available from the SEMS website: Original articles and presentations from our conferences, case studies, translations of best paper finalists into Spanish, reading lists and more

* Continuing education through webinars and certified training courses, including an Engineering Management Certificate program

* Member activities and networking at the Industrial Engineering Research Conference, the Applied Solutions Conference and the Enterprise Transformation Conference

* Improved opportunities to network with colleagues around the world through Linkedln (Search Groups for "Society for Engineering & Management Systems.")

* Access to interactive blog discussions on important engineering management topics at the SEMS blog website

* Bimonthly electronic updates of SEMS ongoing initiatives and upcoming events in the SEMS newsletter
