Many investigations require that interviews, telephone conversations, and even investigators' notes and observations be preserved in their original form, and that usually means accumulating a stack of cassette tapes. The tapes can be mislabeled, misplaced or even erased, and tracking them is one more task that can go sideways and derail the investigation.

KONEXX is a company best known for producing gadgets that allow mobile computer users to connect to a telephone line in most any environment, even when there is no phone jack to plug into. Its Phone 2 PC product line allows users to record sound files to personal computers, label and index them quickly, and distribute the resulting sound files by network, disk or e-mail.

KONEXX uses the standard *.wav sound file format so the files that the program generates will be compatible with most other computers. *.wav files are very common on PCs- if you hear a short musical fanfare when you boot up or close down your PC, or a chord or bell when your PC hits a bump in the information highway, you've listened to a *.wav file. There is also a utility included with most versions of Windows that allows users to create their own sound files with a microphone or another audio input, like a CD player. This utility works fine for short files, but for more involved recording a professional solution is best.

Phone 2 PC Law Enforcement connects between the telephone handset and the PC's sound card, and records both sides of the telephone conversation directly to the hard drive via the PC's sound card. The user can insert bookmarks on the fly during the conversation to expedite relevant portions of the file during playback. The software included with the Phone 2 PC hardware (an interface box, a bit smaller than a pack of cigarettes, powered by an AC adapter) can automatically name the sound files by a predesignated prefix and the date and time, or by whatever name the user might choose. …
