After Election, Workplace Issues Take Center Stage

The overall political landscape was little changed following the November elections. Democrats held on to the White House and strengthened their control of the U.S. Senate by picking up three seats. The GOP maintained control in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Edge of the Fiscal Cliff

In Congress' lame-duck session beginning Nov. 13, debate was expected to accelerate on the so-called fiscal cliff, as the White House and Congress grapple with deep pending spending cuts and sharp tax increases set for 2013.

During 2012, Republican leaders favored cutting government spending and no tax increases, while President Barack Obama and the Democrats proposed balancing spending cuts with some tax increases. Business leaders and their workers will bear the brunt of the outcome, as income tax withholding rates could increase sharply and reduce take-home pay.

2013 Outlook

Workplace issues that will be prominent in the next Congress include:
