...the New Internationalist produced an issue called Finance for Beginners. It was written entirely by Peter Stalker - one of the most influential of our early editors, and still an Advisory Trustee - as a dialogue with a fictional (bored) reader. It was a brilliant device to keep up readers' interest in a subject that might be considered deadly dull, and allowed Peter's dry humour plenty of rein. I was so impressed by the technique that I tried it myself a couple of years later. The issue still reads very entertainingly.

But it was also astonishingly prescient. Take this exchange:

Meanwhile the bankers and the bureaucrats have been quietly flitting around the world and trying to sew it up, whether we understand them or not.

I suppose they know what they're doing. …
