Our London life is now packed into a mountain of cardboard boxes. When I moved to the megalopolis, 22 years ago, my life fitted into the boot of a car; now Isa and I need a 19-metre-long truck to take our belongings to France. How the hell we managed to accumulate so much stuff is a mystery: we never go shopping! Capitalism seems to attach us to things without our even realizing it.

In the first week of January, we lock the door of our flat for the last time and say goodbye to this place that has been home for so long. Nothing has moved on with purchasing the land, but we have decided to relocate anyhow, and rent a large house in a nearby village (for peanuts) to wait with the rest of the collective.

The fortnight-long Think Like a Forest course that we ran on the land in September was a great success. The last workshop was an introduction to forest gardening, which ended with the students creating a model of a lush edible forest. …
