Justice is hard to come by at the best of times in Colombia, where armed groups kill with impunity and politicians have close ties with rightwing paramilitaries. So when a legal reform bill threatened to undermine the few recent advances towards bringing at least some victimizers to justice, Colombian citizens rebelled.

Congress passed a bill that would have seen the division of the Supreme Court, which is responsible for some of the most important investigations into political crimes in recent times, closed down. The bill would also have reduced penalties against any members of Congress found guilty of human rights abuses.

When citizen group Movement of Constituents (Twitter tag #SeMueveLaContraReforma) got wind of this, they mounted an extraordinary defence of the rule of law, collecting signatures for a referendum to reject the reform and seeking to prompt a recall vote against Congress. …
