Canada's mining industry may be world class, but Canadian corporations are increasingly getting bad reviews south of the border.

In Honduras, for example, activists are condemning companies like Vancouver-based Goldcorp Ine (2011 net earnings $1.88 billion) for supporting a law that would deregulate most mining projects in their country. The law would make it easier to displace communities, put clean water at risk and stymie community consultation.

But in early February a coalition of community organizations and activists succeeded in stopping the law in its tracks. More than 600 people gathered outside the National Congress in Tegucigalpa to oppose the bill at a protest organized by the Honduran Centre for the Promotion of Community Development (CEHPRODEC) - while community members in mining regions across the country marched in solidarity. …
