Costa Rica becomes the first country in Central America to approve a law banning hunting for sport, thanks to changes to the existing Wildlife Conservation Law. Within days of the legislation being put forward, the government went one better, with an order closing loopholes in the ban on shark finning which allowed the transport and import of shark fins.

Clothes vs pollution

We could soon be purifying the air one t-shirt at a time, thanks to scientists developing a special additive for laundry detergents. The additive contains particles of titanium dioxide which grip the fabric; when the item is next worn, it reacts with nitrogen oxide, a pollutant, in the atmosphere, breaking it down to harmless particles. Researchers predict one person wearing clothes washed with CatClo could remove the same amount of nitrogen oxide from the air each day as is produced by a family car. …
