In the nominally socialist German Democratic Republic, state control enforces obedience. Whom -apart from those you already know - can you trust? What then are the prospects for respect or solidarity?

Barbara is a dedicated, highly qualified doctor who, because she has applied for a travel visa, finds herself demoted and exiled to a hospital on the remote Baltic coast. Here she experiences the regime's hard and soft controls. She gets the better of the security police officer who keeps an eye on her, though she can barely tolerate the internal body searches that his punctilious medical assistant carries out. One person who - apart from her patients - offers respect and friendship, is another doctor who has to report on his colleagues, including Barbara. …
