Red, orange, blue, green - many Canadians regard the political landscape as a distinct colour palette: deeply divided and unable to blend. But a Canadian non-profit is challenging and encouraging citizens to paint their own political desires.

LeadNow.ca is an advocacy group dedicated to both rapid-response online organizing and long-term, values-based campaigns. Rooted in the conviction that Canadians do indeed care about their country, the organization engages citizens from all points on the political spectrum by having them define the issues they are concerned about.

LeadNow was launched last year with its 'Declaration for Change'. The Declaration was created as an 'open letter to the next Parliament' just before the 201 1 federal election. It was developed out of grassroots conversations and a series of online consultations.

The group's Campaign Director, Matthew Carroll, says the primary aim was to flip politics on its head. 'Instead of having politicians dictate to Canadians, we wanted to say "this is our mandate for you". …
