Name: Albert A. (Al) Delia

Title: Acting Secretary, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services

Years of Service: I have worked for more than 25 years in the public sector in North Carolina. I was appointed acting secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in February 2012 by Governor Bev Perdue after three years as a senior staff member, policy director, and senior advisor to the governor. Prior to joining the governor's office, much of my career was focused on economic development in some of the most challenged areas of the state, which has proven to be valuable experience for my current role overseeing health and human service programs. Prior to joining state government in 2009, 1 was president and chief executive officer of North Carolina's Eastern Region Development Commission, overseeing business recruitment, retention, expansion, and creation in a 13-county region. I also served for more than 10 years as associate vice chancellor for Research, Economic Development, and Community Engagement at East Carolina University, where I provided direction and oversight for the university's units involved in public service and outreach related to economic and community development. While there, I also created the university's federal relations office. As director, I worked closely with congressional offices and federal agencies.

Rewards of the Job: Having worked in the governor's office, I was already familiar with the critical work of DHHS and the challenges the department faces in meeting the needs of a growing population. Since coming on board, I have had the opportunity to meet many of our dedicated employees across the state and see how they are implementing the policies we develop. It is rewarding to know that we are improving people's lives every day through the services we regulate and provide.

Accomplishments Most Proud Of: This has been a busy year for the department, with the rollout of several exciting new programs. …
