We are preparing ourselves psychologically for a tremendous life transformation, not least in terms of income. Isa will soon give up her well-paid university tenure, which means a 90 percent cut in our revenues. But our desire to leave the megapolis and live off the land is stronger than our craving for money. Moreover, we are elated to see how well our new collective seems to be working, even though we are still not living together. We have even passed the litmus test of choosing a name for our project without hours of exhausting discussions. Walking around the site, tearing away our trousers from the grasping brambles, it came to us in a flash! La R.o.n.c.e (brambles in French). It made perfect sense: brambles are at once spiky and nourishing, regenerating and resilient, and the name could be turned into an acronym that works in both French and English: Resist, Organize, Nourish, Create, Exist. …
