In the tense battle between the monster biotech corporations and opponents of 'frankenfoods', the citizens of Europe are increasingly saying 'no' to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their fields and on their plates.

A 'Facts not crops' campaign, run by Avaaz, the global online advocacy community which aims to bring people-powered politics to global decision-making, has collected the one million signatures necessary to be able to submit a legal policy proposal to the European Commission (EC), the European Union (EU)'s executive body.

The campaign calls on the EC to 'put a moratorium on the introduction of GM crops into Europe and set up an independent, ethical, scientific body to research [their] impact and determine regulation'. If it succeeds, it will be the first major victory under the European Citizens' Initiative, which enables EU citizens to call on the EC to deliver policies of interest to them. …
