Brazil's Bicicloteca

Librarian Robson Mendonça is a striking sight as he cycles through São Paulo towing a two-wheeled library - the bright red Bicicloteca. The 61-year-old former street-sleeper wants to encourage reading among the homeless, who are barred from traditional libraries which normally require proof of address. Bicicloteca, which has recently celebrated its first anniversary, also offers Braille books, as well as guided historic walks and solarpowered internet.

Solo forest planter

A man from Assam, India, singlehandedly seeded a 1,360 acre forest after being told by the authorities nothing could grow on the land. Over 30 years ago, Jadav 'Molai' Paveng proposed planting trees on the barren sandbar near his home. After the forest department refused to help, Paveng decided to go it alone and now lives in the forest, which teems with a diverse array of wildlife. …
