My Ballet Confession

Confession: I used to hate ballet. When I was growing up, I was all tap and jazz. I had very little love for pink tights and pointe shoes.

Maybe that's an exaggeration: I really liked my pointe shoes I just wasn't quite disciplined enough to make them work for me. And, as the Dance Spirit staff likes to accurately joke, I was "that girl" who sometimes, shamefully, skipped Advanced Pointe in favor of grabbing a meatball sub from the Subway restaurant down the street.

But now? To quote the fabulous Erik 0. Jones from Center Stage: "Give me tiaras and boys in tights any day." And not just boys- I'll fondly admire the ladies, too, with their long, lithe legs and their oh-so-archy feet. I'd rather spend a night fawning over New York City Ballet than, well, sneaking out for a meatball sub.

So it's with this issue- the annual Ballet Issue- that I firmly declare my love for all things ballet. I'm still no whiz on my toes, but I appreciate the art and, of course, the beautiful ballerinas. …
