Wagner and Bruckner were chosen to continue the Halle's new season at the Bridgewater Hall on October 18 under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor, Markus Stenz.

In a tale of two halves, the concert opened with a wonderfully rewarding performance of the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde. And, though the orchestra gave a new definition to the word 'subtlety7, particularly with some exquisite string playing, it was soprano Irene Theorin whose electrifying singing held the audience in sheer rapture throughout. Striding onto the stage in a stunning violet evening gown complete with a train which should really have had a couple of sturdy page boys to carry, Theorin was a force of nature who understood exactly the feelings of Isolde and, more importantly, how to project them to an audience. She inspired an equal level of commitment from orchestra and conductor and provided the Manchester public with easily the highlight of the season so far. …
