OBITUARIES: Jessie Elizabeth Boal

Jessie Elizabeth Boal, 94 years old, October 12, 2012, in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born on March 3, 1918, in Auburn, Maine, and attended the public schools of her hometown and found great interest and facility in music, learning to play the violin, piano, and (later) organ. She attended Eastern Baptists College in suburban Philadelphia, Pa., where she met her husband-to-be, Arnold Samuel Boal. They were married on May 29, 1940. Upon his graduation from seminary, he and Jessie were appointed to serve at a ministry post in East Los Angeles, Calif., taking up residence at that facility where they worked together.

After a few years, Arnold joined the staff of the Los Angeles City Baptist Mission Society; he and Jessie became members of the Temple Baptist Church in the heart of the city on Pershing Square. Temple Baptist was the owner of the Philharmonic Auditorium, home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The auditorium was furnished with a large four-manual Austin organ, one of the largest in southern California, and Jessie soon learned to master its vast resources, which included boat whistles, gongs, chimes, and other bells. …
