HE START OF A NEW TERM IS AN EXCITING time for every RIMS president. As many of you saw at the RIMS Annual Conference & Exhibition, we've set an aggressive agenda for the year ahead-not only to continue the initiatives started by my immediate predecessors, but also to help guide the Society into the new century.

In the coming year, we can expect a number of initiatives to come to fruition. Distance learning, the FRM designation, quality, our use of technology and improved communications throughout the Society and the risk management community are just a few of the existing projects you can expect to read more about this year. We've made tremendous progress in all of these areas and our challenge is shifting away from developing these programs to implementing, maintaining and expanding them.

Another important initiative that will help the Society tremendously is the new committee structure. By creating a smaller group of committees and giving them clearly defined roles, and calling on volunteers to serve on issue-specific task forces for established periods of time, we can take advantage of the tremendous expertise of RIMS members in the most effective way possible. …
