Elgar Society Celebrates Russian Connections

Certificates of Merit presented to Anastassia Vedyakova and Mikhail Mishchenko

Two Russian musicians have been presented with Certificates of Merit from the Elgar Society in recognition of their work in promoting the legacy of Sir Edward Elgar in a part of the world where there is little tradition of performing his works.

Violinist Anastasia Vedyakova first came to the notice of the Elgar Society as a teenager when she was studying at the Moscow Conservatoire and sought help in obtaining music by Elgar. Under the society's Elgar in Performance scheme, she was provided with scores for a selection of works and has subsequently directed several Elgar-based concerts, performing his String Quartet, Piano Quintet, Violin Sonata, Sospiri and movements from the Violin Concerto with colleagues from the Moscow Conservatoire.

Elgar in Performance offers financial and practical support to facilitate the staging of Elgar works which are felt to be neglected, whether this neglect is due to cost factors, fashions in musical tastes or cultural traditions. The scheme is steered by Elgar Society member Barry Collett: 'We are pleased and privileged to be able to cultivate such talent and enthusiasm/ he reflected when nominating Anastassia Vedyakova for her Certificate of Merit.

The creation of events with an Elgar theme has also led the Elgar Society to award its Certificate of Merit to Mikhail Mishchenko - organist, musicologist and Associate Professor at the St Petersburg Conservatoire. In addition to giving organ recitals across Austria with the Elgar Organ Sonata as the centrepiece, Mikhail Mishchenko has built several events in St Petersburg around the composer's chamber works and organ music. …
