This label (IPO) has been releasing some fine discs and this is no exception. I am a big fan of the music of Thelonious Monk and also of the musicians on this recording, so it is no wonder that I give a big thumbs up to this. It is an excellent CD to add to your collection. All the tunes are from the pen of Mr. Monk, save the Duke Ellington standard It Don 't Mean A Thing. This last tune was recorded by Monk as a piano solo and this arrangement was transcribed for that session.

The writing and the playing here is all top drawer. Jimmy Owens has had precious few recording dates as a leader. This compact disc goes a long way in rectifying that issue. He has been a sideman and session player around New York City for years, going back to the 1960s. …
