This release combines familiar with unknown (to me at least). While I thought I had everything Charlie Christian recorded with Benny Goodman on my shelf, this disc turned up another half dozen or so airshots of the BG Sextet from various Camel Caravan broadcasts.

Christian's role in introducing the broad jazz public to the possibilities of the electric guitar are too well known to readers of this journal to bear repeating, but suffice to say no one will be disappointed in the evidence here. While his recording career covered less than two years, Christian was fortunate in having a devoted Boswell in Jerry Newhouse who recorded many live dates (later doing the same service for Charlie Parker) that would otherwise exist only in memory and legend. The tape of the jam session at the Harlem Breakfast Club Minneapolis comes from the morning of September 24, 1939 following a Benny Goodman big band performance from the previous night (from which an aircheck also exists). Goodman's tenor soloist Jerome and Christian joined the house musicians Hines and Pettiford (here on his first recording) and romped through three standards, feeling no need for brevity. Christian develops his ideas at length, being especially inventive on Stardust while demonstrating a catalog of some of his signature ideas on the two versions of I Got Rhythm. …
