Cirque du Soleil's maestro and his One Drop Foundation are working to help 1 billion people get the clean water that they need

A billion people in the world lack access to clean water and sanitation. Who better to tackle that problem than the creator of some of the most popular shows in the Nevada desert? The One Drop foundation, founded in 2007 by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, has a straightforward mission: "ensure that water is accessible to all, today and forever."

"I chose water because as an artist, it is an important source of inspiration," says Laliberte. "But I also learned at the time that one child dies every 20 seconds for not having access to clean water."

In the run-up to World Water Day, March 22, all seven Las Vegas Cirque shows donated a night's proceeds to One Drop. On that date, all the shows went dark so that their performers could join forces for One Night for One Drop, a water· themed fund-raiser at the Bellagio.

Some 230-odd Cirque performers were joined by singer Jackie Evancho and performance painter David Garibaldi from America's Got Talent and rapper-poet IN-Q. Director and deep-sea explorer James Cameron was a co-chair of the event. …
