NCEA Bids Farewell to Karen Ristau

The headline on Karen Ristau's first column for Momentum in September 2005 read "Courage is What We Give to Each Other." It was to be a harbinger of her eight years at the head of the National Catholic Educational Association.

The cover theme of that issue was "What Will Tomorrow Bring: the Future of Catholic Education" and in her inaugu-ral column she wrote, "This issue of Momentum.suggests we think about this intriguing question. It is a question that.allows us to imagine what might be." The column closed with "If tomorrow brings a more interesting time, one which we might all enjoy, and I believe we can, it may well be because we are giving care, support and courage to each other."

During Pope Benedict XV I's 2008 visit to the United States, NCEA President Karen Ristau presented the pope a folder containing pledges of 2 million hours of community service donated by Catholic youth in honor of the pope's 80th birthday. In the center is the late Archbishop Pietro Sambi, papal nuncio to the United States, and a strong friend of NCEA.

Karen, with Dan Curtin, former executive director of the CACE department, traveled to New Orleans to present a donation from NCEA's Child to Child Campaign to help schools and parishes recover from the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Catholic schools and parish donated $1 million to the campaign.

During the 2007 annual NCEA reception for bishops, Karen displayed a symbolic $1 million hurricane relief check to Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of Washington, and Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, chairman of the NCEA board of directors from 2010 to 2013.
