SoftLine Information Announces Alt-Health Watch on CD-ROM

Article excerpt

Database publisher SoftLine Information, Inc., in partnership with CyberStax, Inc. of Rye, New York, has developed AltHealthWatch, an international compilation of publications focusing on alternative and complementary approaches to health care and wellness. The quarterly database is being introduced on CD-ROM and will be available in a Web version later this year. In addition, the company plans to make it available through established online services.

The premier issue of Alt-HealthWatch contains full-text coverage from 115 periodicals, plus an additional 125 reports, pamphlets, and bulletins-over 15,000 articles with 1,700 embedded images from 1990 through January 1998. Included are peer-reviewed and professional journals, professional and association newsletters, single-therapy periodicals, book excerpts, conference proceedings, consumer magazines, and newsletters. The database is cumulative and, according to the company, content will never be deleted. Each quarterly update will increase the content by 2,500 to 3,000 new articles.

SoftLine and CyberStax created AltHealthWatch to meet the demand for substantive information in the varied fields of alternative and complementary health care beyond the occasional overview article in general-interest publications. A growing group of consumers (more than 60 percent, according to a recent University of Florida study) have already stepped outside the support system of conventional medicine and are spending about $20 billion each year on complementary and integrated therapies. These consumers, along with practitioners, medical and nursing students, insurers, manufacturers, investors, and other businesses, are looking for reliable information on many of the intriguing subjects that are so prevalent in the media. St. John's Wort and its reported effect on depression, herbs and weight loss, alternative treatments for cancer, prayer and healing, the implications of rBGH (bovine growth hormone) and milk, legislation affecting alternative therapies, and the implications of managed care are among the topics of current widespread interest.

Alt-HealthWatch will be published in both a library edition and a professional edition. The library edition is designed for a wide variety of facilities, including public libraries, college libraries, nursing schools, medical schools, general reference collections, hospitals, armed services, VA centers, government agencies, and health education and public health programs. …
