The National Audit Office is reviewing the £6bn Thameslink Programme to improve the rail service linking Brighton and Bedford via London. The programme, which involves upgrading stations and running longer, more frequent, trains, is due by 2018. The study will look at whether the scheme is on track to deliver value for money.


An NAO study is looking at how various Whitehall departments make and use forecasts of programme and project costs. Auditors say that without effective forecasts, departments could be forced into short-term decisions in order to balance books, jeopardising value for money. The report will be informed by findings from previous NAO studies and primary research.
