Summer may be drawing to a close in Australia, but the debate over coal is still heating up. In the wake of record-breaking heatwaves, devastating bushfires and a series of fierce tornadoes, climate activists have stepped up the fight against coalmine expansion.

Jonathan Moylan from the group Frontline Action On Coal made national headlines in January after issuing a fake press release from major Australian bank ANZ. It claimed that the bank had pulled funding from Whitehaven Coal's Maules Creek mine, which threatens prime agricultural land in New South Wales. Media outlets ran with the story, causing Whitehaven Coal's share price to plunge.

Australia's corporate watchdog, ASIC, is seeking revenge. It is investigating whether Moylan's prank breached the Corporations Act, which holds penalties of $500,000 or up to 10 years' imprisonment. …
