Universal segued a solid $61 million overseas debut for "Oblivion" last weekend into a $37.1 million Stateside opening, a better-than-expected result that lifts the film's worldwide total to $14-8.3 million.

Internationally, "Oblivion" has earned $111.2 million so far. The $120 million-budgeted Tom Cruise sci-fier launched two weeks ago overseas to lengthen its playtime before Disney begins rolling out "Iron Man 3" on April 24. The Marvel tentpole bows May 3 domestically.

The Stateside launch for "Oblivion" makes it the seventh-highest debut in April. It's better than the 1999 debut of "The Matrix," at nearly $28 million, and "The Scorpion King " which launched with $36 million in 2002. …
