Stark Trek Into Darkness stormed to the top of the North American charts on an estimated $70.6m opening weekend.

JJ Abrams continues to direct the smash reboot series he started with Paramount in 2009 and returns with the key cast including Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin and John Cho. Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve are the significant newcomers.

The action sequel opened on 336 IMAX screens for an outstanding $13.5m haul for a $40,200 per-screen average. The worldwide running total as of Saturday stands at $20m. Abrams shot a little over 30 minutes with the IMAX cameras.

Iron Man 3 ranks second on at $337.1m through Buena Vista after three weekends, while Warner Bros/Village Roadshow's The Great Gatsby held well in third to climb to $90.2m in the second weekend.

Mud held well in eighth place in its fourth weekend to reach $11.6m through Roadside Attractions.

IFC launched Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha on $134,000 from four for a mighty $33,500 average. …
