TLA and You: Working for Success in 2013

We take pride in the resources and services we provide our communities; and as thoughtful, committed library workers we are about to demonstrate library value and improve the future for Texas libraries and library workers. Here's how:

You spoke. TLA listened. The membership asked TLA to demonstrate the value of libraries and librarians through advocacy and related actions. Your committed, hardworking association staff and Legislative Committee listened and went to work. Their efforts began in August, 201 1. Through conversation, collaboration, and diligent work, the Legislative Committee developed a simple, unified platform and a new approach to advocacy.

For the 83rd Legislative Session, TLA has put forth a credible, easy-to-explain library platform that benefits library support for initiatives Texans care about: educational success and workforce readiness. The straightforward legislative platform reflects the State's goals, supports all types of libraries, and benefits Texans regardless of which corner of the state they live in with two simple-to-explain requests. Our platform asks for:

1. Shared Digital Content - $9.25 million over the biennium

2. Innovation Partnership Grants for increasing literacy and educational success - $3.4 million over the biennium

You spoke. TLA listened. You asked TLA to develop a campaign that identifies and articulates what users value about library services and raises awareness of the value of libraries and librarians.

The Public Relations and Marketing Committee is developing clear evidence in lay terms to make the case for library support. The information is being created in simple to use, easy to distribute formats.

You spoke. TLA listened. You asked for a way to support legislative initiatives that respects the constraints on your time and budgets and is compatible with the work restrictions against advocating faced by some library employees.

On Virtual Action Day (February 12, 20 1 3) and throughout the legislative season, TLA will be asking you to support a virtual campaign that can be conducted from the comfort of your own home. This campaign can be assimilated into your lifestyles, bypassing time, budget, and work constraints and restoring the rights of our thousands of members to support legislative initiatives that enrich our communities through library services and access to electronic resources.

You spoke. TLA listened. You suggested TLA cultivate a diverse community of library champions to support a statewide advocacy effort. This simple, innovative suggestion has the power to transform advocacy into a grassroots effort in which everyone can participate. …
